The United States is facing a sharp decline in international tourism in 2025, and industry leaders are sounding the alarm. According to Booking.com CEO Glenn Fogel, foreign arrivals dropped 3.8% in the first half of the year, with an even steeper 5.1% decline in July—right at the peak of summer travel.
The culprit? Complicated entry procedures, long visa processing times, and outdated travel policies that are turning eager travelers toward other destinations. With the 2026 FIFA World Cup and 2028 Los Angeles Olympics on the horizon, experts warn that unless the U.S. streamlines its border entry process, it could lose billions in tourism spending.
Fogel stressed the urgency of the situation, noting that international travelers are critical to the U.S. economy, spending more per trip than domestic tourists. Without immediate reform, the country risks falling behind global competitors like Canada, Mexico, and European nations that are actively wooing travelers with easier entry requirements.
The message is clear: If the U.S. wants to reclaim its spot as a top travel destination, fixing the travel entry experience needs to be priority #1. Until then, millions of potential visitors—and billions in revenue—could be left at the gate.
